Coin collecting is a hobby that involves gathering or collecting coins for specific cause. The cause or reasons for collecting coins are called collection themes. There are many different themes ranging from country collections to type collections.

In the beginning, a coin collector might have started coin collecting because of having extra coins after a trip to a foreign country. He may also start coin collecting because of liking the design of a certain coin or finding an old coin which is not in circulation anymore and just wanting to keep it. As the collector's interest increase, so will the desire for more variety of the coins he has started to collect.

While some coin collectors are generalists and prefer to have a collection of different types of coins, others are very specific with what they want and will prefer to collect coins of a specific variety.

Coin collecting has since become a sort of competition for the collectors. They wish to outwit and outshine the others with their coin collections. Others just feel proud of having a unique set of coins which no one else has. This competition is what makes coin collecting very expensive as collectors do their best to get the most prized or most sought after coins.

Common Collection Themes For Coin Collecting

Collecting coins from as many countries possible is called country theme. This is fairly easy as travel nowadays is rather common. One may also purchase the desired coins through the internet or get them from friends staying in other countries.

Year collection is coin collecting based on the year that the coin was minted. Different collectors have different bases for coin collecting by year. It could be based on a particular coin like a penny or dollar and collect it from the very first time it was minted to the present versions of the same coin.

Coin collecting based on the difference of mintmark of some coins is called mintmark collections. Some mintmarks are more uncommon and therefore more difficult to obtain. This is what makes coin collecting very exciting and expensive.

Variety collections are collections which based on a particular coin made from different sets of dies. As the dies were hand made during older times, some of them may have slight differences which now becomes the basis for collecting this sort of theme.

Coin collecting also includes a theme based on errors made on the coins which is called error collection. Errors were more frequently found on coins made before the 19th century. This is because the process of minting was not yet automated then.

Collections based on subjects called subject collections are also common. Examples of these are coins with certain subjects such as animals or boats. The difficulty in this type of coin collecting is how to look for coins of the specific subject from around the world.

Another basis for coin collecting is the composition of the coin. Some international coins are composed of different kinds of metals. It can be a combination of two or three metals.

Coin collecting based on the period from which the coins were minted are called period collections. These collections may comprise of coins from the Victorian era or go as far down history as the Byzantine or Greek period. There are many different periods which can be the bases for this kind of coin collecting.

Although coin collecting is a rather expensive hobby, the excitement and pride of owning a coin collection is worth the amount of money and time spent on it.
