What A Coin Collector Should Know About Coin Grading

Coin grading is the method used to determine the condition of your coins and their estimated value. If you are new to coin collection and is just starting you're your own collections, it would be a good idea for you to start learning about coin grading systems. Coin grading is important as it will help you find out the condition of your coins. Coin grading is important to learn because people who know how to spot rare coins that are still in very good condition always have an advantage.

Understanding Coin Grading

The coin grading system developed over several decades. One of the most accurate coin grading systems in the 1950s is the Sheldon Scale. It was popularized by William Sheldon in his book the Penny Whimsy. As time passes, many other coin grading systems emerge. One of the important coin grading systems of all time is the letter coin grading system.

The letter coin grading system describes the condition of the coin with letters of the English alphabet. For example, PO stands for poor or basal state. It is considered as the lowest grade for a coin. Fr in coin grading stands for fair. It means that the coin is a little bit better than basal.

AG in coin grading stands for almost good. This means that the coin is not so well preserved. But almost good also mean that the condition is not so bad. Other letters used in the letter coin grading system are, G which stands for good, VG which stands for very good, F which stands for fine, VF which stands for very fine and EF or XF which means that the coin has extra fine quality.

Coin grading is a very delicate task. It is a good idea to seek professional help when it comes to coin grading even if you have been collecting coins for a long time. This is especially so for coins you are considering to buy, as the company can give you accurate description of the quality of the coins.

Presently, there are at least four coin grading services that are most popular around the world. They are the Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS), the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), American Numismatic Association Certification Service (ANACS) and the Independent Coin Grading Company (ICG). Of the four commonly used coin grading services, the ICG is involved in the controversy involving the grading of modern coins. However, according to experts, this controversy does not mean that the services of ICG are below par when compared to the coin grading services offered by the other mentioned companies.
