For centuries, people have found it enjoyable to collect coin as a hobby. At first, people started coin collecting as amassing wealth. Finally coin collecting is considered as putting together different kinds of coins for the sake of their value as collectors' items. At the highest levels of coin collecting, some collectors strive to outperform each other by acquiring the rarest and most wanted coins available. Different Types of Coin Collections

There are many different types of coin collections people are interested in. The most common types of coin collections people are interested in are coins from different countries and different time periods. Coin collectors who collect coins from different countries usually do their best to obtain current or past coins from as many countries as they possibly can. This kind of coin collection would almost certainly be a never ending collection. This is because some countries change their currencies very often. Rather than concentrating on different countries, year collections focus more on a specific coin and denomination like the Lincoln penny for instance which was minted in 1909 up to the present.

Other than the mentioned types of collection, there also coin collectors who are more focused on coins with mistakes on them. This kind of collections is called error collections. The mistakes on the coins may be very obvious or not at all. Coins were minted by hand before the 19th century, so the older coins usually have more mistakes. Some of the common errors are double dies, repunched mint marks, overdates, displace coins, double strikes, off metal coins, clipped coins and mules. Mules are coins that have different denominations on each side. Collectors like coins with errors because they are very unusual. One can rarely encounter them nowadays as minting is now fully automated.

Some coin collectors focus on collecting coins which are designed in a specific way. For instance, a collector may want to collect coins which have a hole in the center. There are several countries which have coins with a hole in the center. This kind of collections is called type collections.

Other collectors like to collect coins which have a specific subject for example ships or animals marked on the coin. To be able to enlarge their collection, these collectors would have to do a lot of study to see which countries have coins with the specific subjects they are interested in. Some of these collectors may also get the help of a coin dealer to obtain certain coins which is of interest to them.

Even the composition of a coin can be the interest of a coin collector. As some coins are composed of 2 or more types of metal, this can be the basis of the collection. There are a few countries which make their coins with two or more types of metal.

Coin collecting preference is always up to the collector. Whatever the collectors fancy in a coin may be the basis for their collection.
