One of the pilots in his squadron wore this military coin around his neck in a leather pouch. He was later captured by the Germans upon the damage of his plane. Most of the pilot's belongings were confiscated. However, the Germans did not see his military coin. During the confusion when the British bombarded the area in which he was being held, he was able to escape. Although he wore civilian attire to escape recapture by the Germans, his military coin helped him to prove that he was indeed a Frenchman. The Military Coin Today The legends surrounding this soldier's life has been told to many others who have served in the military. This is why it has now become a tradition amongst flying squadrons to use the military coin. Even other military units in the various branches of the armed services, are now using the military coin. The military coin is also sometimes used within organizations that are not related to the military. For example, the military coin is now given to members who join specific organizations. It is given as an award that is used to improve morale. The military coin is also sometimes sold to commemorate special occasions. At times the military coin is even used as fundraisers. President Bill Clinton recently displayed several racks of his military coin. He received the military coin from U.S. Service members. This event happened on the credenza behind his Oval Office desk. Whenever pictures were taken of the president in his office, the military coin can be seen in the background of his official portrait. This portrait can be seen in the White House next to the pictures of the other US Presidents.
