Everything About The One Dollar Coin

When talking about a dollar, instead of a one dollar coin, people will usually think of a paper note. Just like all other paper currency, it can be folded into your pocket and is not very cumbersome. However, what if we don't have paper currency for a dollar? What if all the one dollar paper notes are replaced with one dollar coin? Would people prefer the one dollar coin or would they reject the one dollar coin as they have in the past? The fact is, most people prefer to use paper currency. They would rather have the one dollar coin in their coin collections spend it as currency.

The Silver One Dollar Coin

The silver one dollar coin looks great, but that may be its one and only good quality. Various versions of the silver one dollar coin have been circulated in the past. The silver one dollar coin has been around for a long time. However, you will rarely see the silver one dollar coin now as most of them are in the hands of collectors. When you do find a silver one dollar coin nowadays, it's nearly as if you've found a treasure. You save the one dollar coin as part of your collection or you can spend it, since it is worth the same as a one dollar paper note.

The Sacagawea Dollar

Recently, gold colored one dollar coin has been released. This gold colored one dollar coin is called the Sacagawea dollar. It is named after the famous Native American woman whose picture was printed on it. This one dollar coin soon fizzled out, just like the silver one dollar coin. Today it is rare to see the one dollar coin in circulation.

The Sacagawea one dollar coin too is most likely in the possession of coin collectors. The reason this coin didn't catch on is probably the same as why the silver dollar didn't catch on. The one dollar coin is too bulky to carry as it doesn't fold as the paper currency does. Will the silver or gold colored one dollar coin ever catch on? Maybe one day it will, but the government may have to change the way of releasing these coins.

Europeans Have It Right

In Europe, when a coin such as the one dollar coin starts to be circulated, they will remove the paper currency. This is so that people don't have a choice between the two. If the United States government will also have to stop giving people a choice between the one dollar coin and the paper note if it wants people to start using the one dollar coin more frequently. If given the choice, people will always prefer the less cumbersome, foldable version of the paper dollar. This will then leave the one dollar coin only to the coin collectors.
